The Opportunity:

The role of Development and Event Manager is an exciting opportunity to join an established but growing national non-profit organization dedicated to improving spinal health care through research, education, and advocacy. This position plays an important role, driving awareness for spinal health and planning, managing, and executing the Spinal Research Foundation’s fundraising events and activities.

The Organization:

Established in 2002 and headquartered in Reston, Virginia, the Spinal Research Foundation (“SRF”) is driven by proving what works, driving innovations, and empowering all with knowledge and hope. In order to execute our vision, SRF has built a national network of nearly distinguished spine clinics and research partners. Today, there are more effective treatment options available with greater long-term success than ever before. The Foundation strives to harness this knowledge to educate patients, physicians, and payers as to the best and most effective spinal health care treatments available.

The Spinal Research Foundation promotes our research through The Journal of the Spinal Research Foundation, a publication that is printed and shared with our network of partners and widely available via our website in electronic format.

In addition, the Spinal Research Foundation coordinates a nation-wide network of races and events that celebrate our Spinal Champions and their success. These races host thousands of participants, clinicians, and families. SRF uses these races and events as a vehicle to showcase the latest in research findings, best-practices, and innovation in spinal treatment.

The Role:

Plan, initiate, and execute the organization’s fundraising efforts, event planning and execution of the national race series “We’ve Got Your Back” and other events (e.g. gala, etc.), digital communications (website, email newsletter, social media), and fostering relationships with key stakeholders and potential donors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Fundraising

  • Assume lead role in planning and executing all fundraising events and activities

  • Create annual development plan and calendar to ensure year-round engagement of donors/sponsors

  • Seek out potential new donors/sponsors and nurture existing relationships to build solid database

  • Conduct sponsorship and grant research

  • Plan and coordinate the design, production, and distribution of all development collateral materials such as direct mail packages, e-newsletters, brochures, and proposals

  • Collect, track, analyze, and report data on annual and major giving programs

  • Foster positive donor relations and provide donor acknowledgement for tax purposes

  • Maintain donor records, ensuring accuracy, security, and confidentiality

  • Performs other job duties as needed

Event Planning:

  • Initiate, plan, manage, and execute all aspects of event planning and logistics (existing events and new)

  • Manage budgets and seek cost-savings to maximize net return

  • Create and execute an effective promotion strategy Provide leadership and project management for national “We’ve Got Your Back” race sites

  • Facilitate the recruiting and coordinating of volunteers

  • Coordinate, prospect, and capture local and national sponsorships

Communications/Website/Social Media

  • Develop and implement the Foundation’s initiatives in social media, video sharing, web communities

  • Build and promote social media channels, engage constituents across channels to drive greater engagement with SRF

  • Website content management


  • Bachelors Degree required. Fields of marketing, communications, business or similar preferred

  • Three to seven years work experience

  • Event planning experience preferred

  • Salesforce/Causeview experience a plus

  • Proficient understanding of social media sites including LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter, and others

  • Experience and proficiency with Microsoft Office, Windows, and Google platforms

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills

  • Ability to work in a variety of situations and with a variety of people including donors, volunteers, corporate sponsor representatives, medical experts, and others

  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills

  • Self started - ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Ability to concurrently manage several high-priority projects

  • Flexible, organized, detail-oriented, and able to anticipate next steps

  • Ability to plan, prioritize, and organize workload in a fast paced environment

  • Represent the Foundation in a highly professional and appropriate manner at all times

  • Travel as necessary
