Position Overview
The Development Associate is a full-time position who will support PLA’s National Development, Strategy & Innovation (DSI) department. The Development Associate, with guidance and support from the DSI team, will create funding proposals, federal grant applications, partnership proposals, stewardship reports, and other written materials for internal and external audiences.
This position requires a highly organized and motivated individual who excels at both rigorous writing and project management, with proven ability to deliver high-quality proposals and deliverables on deadline. Ideal candidates will possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, which are required to interact effectively with internal leaders as well as external supporters. This position will derive satisfaction from
working in both a virtual and collaborative environment while devoting significant time to independent efforts.

Key Responsibilities
With guidance from Development Leadership, write and prepare exceptional,
highly competitive proposals and government RFPs that are consistently chosen
for funding or partnership;
Execute with exceptional attention to detail and fidelity PLA’s proven
institutional advancement process;
Help develop compelling projects that are operationally feasible and strategically
aligned;
Conduct prospect, industry, and design research that support strategic priorities
and projects;
Prepare accurate, timely and compelling reports for funders and strategic
partners;
Develop, compile, and edit supplemental materials that support written
communications (i.e., backgrounders, biographies, executive talking points, and
other related materials);
Communicate with other departments in connection with proposal preparation
and execution of grant deliverables;
Support development efforts on behalf of the organization’s summer learning
program;
Provide ongoing status and benchmark reports as well as end-of- year
reconciliation and evaluation of data, strategies, and systems;
Develop project budgets and convert budget into grant narrative;
Produce newsletters, annual reports, brochures and other communications;
Help craft donor cultivation, stewardship and recognition processes and
programs;
Organize and maintain development records, office files, and R&D materials;
Support the development of organizational infrastructure, with opportunity to
work with technical advisors to help ensure successful integration of new
systems;
Support media outreach, including website and press releases; and
Perform other duties as assigned.
Candidate Qualifications
A passionate belief in PLA’s mission, values, and educational model;
Excellent writing, interpersonal, and oral communication skills with proven
ability to present, write, edit, and organize thoughts in a clear, concise, and well-
organized manner;
Bachelor’s Degree is required, exceptional academic performance in programs
that require intensive writing is preferred;
Honesty, humility and desire to learn;
Prior experience in grant or proposal writing, fundraising, and project
management is preferred – key is the ability to demonstrate quantifiable,
consistent, and positive impact on the organizations you have worked for;
Exceptional attention to detail;
Demonstrated track record of successfully managing multiple projects
simultaneously;
Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively and thrive in a
fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment;
Capacity to remain calm and focused when faced with unexpected challenges;
Ability to change voice and writing style to fit a particular audience and purpose;
Ability to digest materials of considerable complexity and synthesize across
multiple sources to produce materials for diverse audiences;
Conceptual ability to translate ideas and suggestions from the general and
philosophical to the specific and quantifiable in the development of proposals
and other written materials;
Excellent interpersonal skills and able to interact effectively with a diverse array
of people, including senior leaders;
Highly proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; and familiarity with
cloud-based database platforms;
Capacity to work extended hours during peak season; and
Working knowledge of budget development and financial analysis is preferred.
