Overview

Girl Up is “by girls, for girls” – girl-led and girl-driven - and engages girls to take action to achieve global gender equality and change our world. Through our leadership development programs, Girl Up inspires, convenes, trains and connects girls globally, helping to position them as leaders and changemakers. Girl Up is hosted at the United Nations Foundation, working across a global community of partners to achieve gender equality worldwide.

The Director of Development, Girl Up is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing all of Girl Up’s fundraising, including the major gifts program, annual appeals, corporate partnerships, foundation giving and any fundraising events and campaigns. The Director of Development reports to the Co-Executive Director, Girl Up and works closely with Girl Up’s programs and communications teams, in coordination with the Girl Up Advisory Board, and in collaboration with the UN Foundation’s Integrated Development team.

Responsibilities

Work in partnership with Girl Up’s Co-Executive Directors to set a development plan and then establish a measurable action plan to advance it;

Work in partnership with Girl Up’s Co-Executive Directors to lead fundraising to meet $4 million operating budget, with annual growth;

Build and grow a major gifts program including identification, cultivation and solicitation of major donors;

Manage and collaborate with a team of 2-4 staff members focused on development, helping them establish thresholds and donor portfolios;

Work closely with team to oversee all development functions, including grant seeking and proposal writing, the annual fund, special events and the fundraising database and tracking systems;

Plan and direct capital campaigns and other major fundraising drives;

Manage and maintain existing and new partnerships;

Deliver corporate pitches and public appearances/accept speaking engagements to raise the profile of Girl Up and increase funding;

Work in partnership with the UN Foundation’s Integrated Development team to collaborate on potential donors and partners;

Collaborate with the Girl Up Advisory Board;

Other duties as assigned.

Selection Criteria

College degree required, Masters preferred;

Minimum 8-10 years of experience in development and fundraising with strong track record of success in corporate, major gift and foundation giving;

Have knowledge and experience in fundraising techniques, particularly major gift fundraising;

Have an extensive network of funders that you have worked with previously;

Possess the skills to work with and motivate staff, board members and other volunteers;

Have the desire to get out of the office and build external relationships;

Possess the skills to effectively manage and maintain relationships;

Be a self-starter and goal-driven to initiate donor visits and fundraising calls;

Be organized and prioritize follow-up and follow-through;

Display a positive attitude, demonstrate presence, self-confidence, common sense and good listening ability;

Excellent team-player with the ability to work with different stakeholders;

Strong commitment to gender equality and youth development;

Ability to travel up to 30% of the time;

Ability to meet position deliverables;

Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed;

Ability to work under pressure and handle stress.
