Job Description:

STRIVE is a workforce development agency that has been transforming the lives of at-risk populations for 30 years by providing support and training that lead to living wage employment and societal re-integration. STRIVE is a national and international organization with 17 affiliates in the U.S. and four abroad. STRIVE’s programs provide comprehensive job training and job development services for unemployed individuals. This program, proven since 1984 with over 60,000 graduates, instills the basic skills needed to be prepared for skills training, employment, and ongoing career advancement in living wage jobs.

The Director of Philanthropy reports directly to the Senior Director of Development and Corporate Communications and works with the following constituents in designing, implementing and managing a comprehensive, coordinated and effective principal/planned/major gift program:

CEO of STRIVE International

CEO’s of STRIVE affiliates

Development staff colleagues

STRIVE Board of Directors

STRIVE Capital Campaign Committee volunteers

Professional advisors and agents of wealth

This individual will personally manage a portfolio of 75-100 prospects across the four stages of the solicitation process: Discovery, Cultivation, Solicitation and Stewardship. S/he will also be expected to serve as a resource to volunteers and colleagues who have been assigned personal solicitation responsibilities.

Principal Duties:

Identify, qualify and cultivate prospective donors for principal/planned/major gifts.

Develop and propose strategies for solicitation of principal/major gifts, including: determining ongoing relationships with prospect/donor; recommending specific purpose and level of gift; identifying those to be involved in cultivation and subsequent solicitation; assuring that solicitations are carried out.

Demonstrate appropriate cultivation, solicitation and stewardship skills while developing meaningful and lasting relationships with key constituents.

Develop a proactive planned giving program (including infrastructure and marketing) and provide prospects/donors with planned giving consultative services.

Work collaboratively with colleagues to assure that all aspects of the principal/major gift solicitation process are proceeding smoothly.

Develop and implement programs for principal, major and planned gifts staff process documentation and improvement, and progress tracking/moves management. Continually reinforce the prospect relationship continuum.

Participate, as required, in development initiatives including solicitation strategy teams for key prospects and internal planning efforts.

Maintain current knowledge of STRIVE programs and priorities in order to present the organization to prospective donors in the best possible light

Coordinate an effective program for recognition, involvement and stewardship of principal/planned/major gift donors in coordination with the Senior Director of Development and the CEO of STRIVE.

Knowledge and Experience:

Five or more years of individual principal/planned/major gift fundraising experience

Bachelor’s Degree

Skills and Abilities:

Ability to understand the needs and interests of major donors in order to facilitate their relationships with STRIVE.

Interest in all aspects of workforce development

Understanding of fundraising priorities developed through excellent working relationships with Development colleagues, STRIVE leadership team and Board members/ volunteers.

Demonstrated leadership qualities and the ability to successfully manage multi-functional or diverse activities and initiatives.

Ability to see and understand the objectives of the principal/major gifts group, and to integrate these with the larger goals of STRIVE and its affiliates.

Ability to initiate, analyze, monitor, evaluate and alter strategic advancement plans.

Ability to articulate the case for support so that prospects embrace the vision/mission/goals of STRIVE.

Excellent oral, written, interpersonal, analytical and organizational skills required.

Knowledge of tax laws that impact charitable giving, personal assets and estates.

In addition to these general skills, the position requires the ability to participate in all aspects of the gift cycle:(1) to initiate contacts with potential major donors; (2) to develop appropriate cultivation strategies for them, including working with volunteers; (3) to move potential donors in an appropriate and timely fashion toward solicitation and closure; (4) to make solicitations when appropriate; (5) to maintain stewardship contacts with donors.

Facility with fundraising software, especially that which applies to the specific area of prospect management.

Willingness to routinely travel within New York metropolitan area and occasionally to other areas of the country.

S/he will have the ability to work on many fronts simultaneously, keeping both details and the big picture in mind. He or she will be able to see opportunities and set priorities while building and managing a wide variety of relationships. He or she must develop a passion for the mission and vision of STRIVE International.
