The Advancement Team at Darlington School seeks a Director of Major gifts. This team member will manage the relationships of 150 current major gift donors and oversee the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major gifts of $5,000 and more for Darlington’s annual, capital, and planned gift efforts.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Manage a portfolio of approximately 150 prospects capable of giving $5,000 or more, moving them from identification through solicitation. Design and implement personalized strategies for each prospect.

Secure at least 5 to 8 meaningful face-to-face visits weekly, and 2 to 3 major gift solicitations per month.

Travels as necessary to carry out personal cultivation/solicitation visits (70% of the time)

Conduct one-on-one prospecting sessions with high-level donors, board members, staff, and others to identify and qualify major gift prospects.

Initiates contact with major gift donors and uncovers potential leadership.

Acquires an understanding of the background, needs and interests of prospects in order to strengthen personal relationship and connectivity to Darlington.

Develops and directs appropriate cultivation strategies including volunteer opportunities, campus visits or cultivation events/programs.

Moves potential donors in an appropriate and timely fashion toward solicitation/closure.

Maintains stewardship contact with prospects at all times.

Documents progress through call reports and prepares follow-up materials as needed (proposals, letters, endowed fund updates, etc.)

SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintains a level of competency in planned giving

Attends and supports other advancement program activities where appropriate (alumni gatherings, reunion weekend, phonathons and admissions events).

Assists with stewardship and publicity arrangements on important gifts, programs, accomplishments or events.

Develops internal relationships with administration, faculty, Trustees and the advancement team to garner support as needed

Darlington seeks candidates who can contribute to the academic and extracurricular life of the school.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS NEEDED

Believe in the mission of Darlington School, appreciation for its culture and history, and ability to effectively articulate the school’s message.

Loyalty to a team; willing spirit in supporting team projects and team members.

Ability to build personal relationships through strong communication skills, an inquisitive nature and a genuine interest in learning about prospective donors and their needs.

Highly energetic self-starter with the organizational skills to plan and successfully complete travel and follow-through.

Flexibility in work hours to include extensive travel, evenings and weekends as needed.

Strong interpersonal skills that include excellent oral and written capabilities.

Stays abreast of Raisers Edge and other in-house technology systems and works with Advancement Services Officer to ensure availability of accurate, appropriate computer support for program.
