Open sinceOctober2015,the SugarHill Children’sMuseumofArt& Storytellingistheculturalcapstone ofBroadway Housing Communities’ (BHC)SugarHilldevelopmentattheintersection oftheAfrican- American communityofHarlemand the Latino communitiesofWashington Heights.The Museumprovideschildrenwith opportunitiesto discover,engage with,and appreciateimportantworksofartas theystrengthentheirown cognitive and creative development. Museumprogramsdevelopedfor3-8 yearoldsandtheirfamiliesfeatureexhibitionsranging fromsingle-artistpresentationstothematic surveysand newlycommissioned artistprojects;intensive hands-on arteducationprograms;storytelling series;and relatedfamilyprograms,and arefullyaligned with BHC’ssocialjusticemission.

TheMuseumisa programofBHC,anonprofitorganization committedtoredressingthe challenges of poverty,inequality and homelessness. Founded in 1983, BHChasdeveloped sevenresidential buildingsinWestHarlemandWashingtonHeightsthatprovide housingand otherservicesforformerly homelessand at-riskchildren,families andsingle adults;operatestwo highquality earlychildhood centers;andprovidesopportunitiesfortenantsandthe widercommunitytoengagewith the culturalarts. TherecentlycompletedSugarHill Project,designed byacclaimedarchitectDavid Adjaye andlocated in theNational HistoricDistrictofSugarHill,includes 124 unitsofpermanent,affordable housing; an early childhood center;achildren’smuseum;and othercommunityfacilities.

DESCRIPTION:

TheDevelopmentManagerisakeymemberoftheadministrativeteamworking in closecollaborationwith BroadwayHousing Communities toensurethe Museum’sfinancial long-term sustainability.Thisfull-timeposition reportsto andassists BHC ChiefDevelopmentOfficer (CDO)in settingandimplementingfundraisingstrategy insupport oftheMuseum’s $1.9Mannual organizational budget, includingmanagingandoverseeing theMuseum’smajordonorandinstitutionalgiving (private and publicgrants)programs,Board relationsanddonorcultivation,andspecial events,including an annualfallgalaco-hostedby BHCand theMuseum. Thisincludesassisting the CDOin ongoing tasksassociated with identifyingandcultivatingpotential donorsandsecuring contributionsandgrants. TheDevelopmentManagerworksclosely withMuseumleadership andstaff toidentifyandsecurefundingforMuseumoperations andprogramsandtorepresent the Museum’smission and workto externalconstituentsin NewYorkCity andnationally.ThispositionalsomanagestheMuseum’sfull-timeDevelopmentAssociate.Thispositionoffersthe opportunityto develop and growcorefund development fora neworganizationwithsocialjusticeatitscore andgrowingcommunityimpact.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

ReportingdirectlytotheCDO,overseealldevelopment activities relatedto theMuseum’s operationsand programming, in close collaboration with BroadwayHousingCommunities.

Manage institutionalgiving program including strategizing,writing,editingandfinalizingall proposals,reportsandcommunication toensureeffective program managementandsuccessinreachingtargetedgoals.

In closecollaboration with theCDO, develop,cultivateand solicit majordonorandinstitutionalprospects to ensuresteadypipeline ofpotential support.

Assistinall activities relatedtothe Museum’s Board ofTrusteesincludingBoard development,governance andfundraisingactivity;serve asstaffrepresentativeforBHC-MuseumJointBoardDevelopmentCommittee.

Manage major and individual givingactivities forthe Museumincludingannualdonorappeals,individual strategyand solicitation and on-going cultivation activities.Support communicationsinitiativesthatimpactfundraising andmembership includingprintedcollateral,Museumwebsite andsocial mediacampaigns.

Strategize and oversee creationofmembershipcampaignsand developmentofexpandedmembership benefits.

In collaboration with CDO, and with support ofSpecial Events& RentalIncome Manager,plan andmanageMuseumdonor cultivation andfundraisingeventsincluding exhibition openingsandprogramsandmembership events.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

B.A.degree, preferablyinmuseum,artsoreducation relatedfield;graduate degreepreferred.

4 years’experiencein developmentincludingdemonstratedsuccessinsecuring institutionalgivingand major donor initiatives.

Experience in preparing and presentingfinancial/budgetinformationto donors.

Excellentwritingskills, confidentspeaking skills.

Experience infast-pacedand/orstart-upworkenvironments; abilityto takethe initiative.

Strong teamplayer; able toengage with diversestafftogather,synthesize and useprogrammaticandfinancial information foreffectivefundraising.

Proven abilityto handleconfidential information.

High level ofcomfort workingwith CRMsoftware(experience with Blackbaud Altrua plus).

Commitmenttothefieldofarts/museum education andthe impact ofartsengagement on youngchildren.

Fluencyin Spanish aplus.
