The senior executive director of advancement (SEDOA) for the University of Utah, Health Academics will lead a team of fundraisers and provide strategic guidance in establishing the vision and annual philanthropic goals for University of Utah Health's schools of medicine and dentistry and the colleges of pharmacy, nursing, and health. This important and highly visible position will report to University of Utah Health's associate vice president/chief philanthropy officer and will collaborate with the deans of each school and college, the directors of advancement, and University of Utah Health's office of advancement to develop a comprehensive fundraising program that includes major gifts, annual giving, alumni relations, planned giving, foundations relations, and a robust stewardship program. TheSEDOAwill set school/college fundraising objectives and work plans that are meaningful, challenging, realistic, and metric- and action-oriented. This position will help to build comprehensive and to scale advancement programs while also creating, in conjunction with advancement directors, campaign plans with well-articulated case statements. This position has substantial management, supervisory and mentoring responsibilities.
1.Supervises the academic fundraising team, develops a strong working knowledge of each school or college, and supports key academic initiative for all areas of University of Utah Health.
2.In consultation with the associate vice president/chief philanthropy officer, the deans and directors of advancement, establishes the vision and short and long-term fundraising goals for the academic team and sets school/college fundraising objectives that are meaningful, challenging, realistic, and metric and action oriented. Also works with this team to establish dedicated and defined fundraising budgets for each school/college that will support its fundraising priorities and initiatives.
3.Builds close working relationships with the dean, the advancement director of each school or college, the executive director of university alumni relations, and other university fundraising professionals in order to establish well-defined strategies for alumni engagement that are integrated with a comprehensive fundraising program that includes major gifts, annual and planned giving, foundations relations, and a robust stewardship program.
4.Works collaboratively with University of Utah's clinical fundraising team and other university fundraising professionals to support donors whose philanthropic interests span research, education, and health care.
5.Develops an annual fund strategy in collaboration with the dean, the director of advancement, and the office of advancement's annual giving team that is specific to each school/college.
6.Recruits, supervises, and evaluates staff. Helps create a culture of encouragement and accountability.
7.Serves on the senior leadership team for University of Utah Health's office of advancement.
8.Assumes responsibility for building a culture of philanthropy.
9.Mentors advancement professionals to work and partner with deans and alumni to create an engaged community of philanthropic support.
10.Builds teams by serving staff
members, taking an interest in their careers, and providing the support and professional resources necessary for them to be successful.
11.Works with directors of advancement to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of major gift prospects and donors capable of making six to eight figure gifts.
12.Works with the deans and directors of advancement to create and administer volunteer boards to assist with advancement activities for each of the schools/colleges.
13.Articulates, compellingly, the mission, case and vision of University of Utah Health.
14.Advances and stewards the interest of donors or potential donors while honoring and protecting the institution's best interests.
15.Serves as a high-profile representative of University of Utah Health, having ultimate integrity and respectfully treating all with whom he/she interacts, whether donors, prospective donors, faculty or staff.
16.Communicates with the associate vice president/chief philanthropy officer, deans, and other senior leaders who are actively involved with pending and/or outstanding solicitations with major benefactors.
17.Submits regular reports to the associate vice president/chief philanthropy officer, the dean of each school/college, and other institutional leaders as required.

Bachelor's degree in a related area, or equivalency, and ten years of demonstrated successful fundraising experience. A minimum of five years of increasing responsibility and management of a team of fundraisers required. Seven figure fundraising experience required. Advanced skill to meet predetermined goals and objectives through effective program/project planning, organization, execution and evaluation. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.
Prior fundraising experience in higher education is preferred.
Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.
At least ten years of progressively responsible fundraising experience in academic medicine, with a solid record of accomplishment of closing seven to eight figure gifts.
At least five years of management experience, including proven effectiveness at modeling, teaching, and leading best-practice fundraising skills for front-line fundraisers and assessing individual and collective results.
The intellectual depth, maturity, wisdom, humor and collaborative skills to garner the trust and confidence of school/college leadership, faculty, senior advancement leadership, colleagues, and other constituents.
Ability to work within a complex, multi-divisional environment to establish priorities, set objectives, and achieve stated goals.
Superlative interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to work well with people at all levels of an organization, across a diverse range of educational and social backgrounds and to demonstrate an honest respect for each individual.
A broad understanding of multi-faceted campaign planning, implementation and management.
Superior written and oral communication skills; the ability to articulate and translate eloquently, the complex goals, mission and aspirations of University of Utah Health's academic programs for all audiences; clarity and elegance in writing and speaking.
A strong desire to champion the educational and training programs and strengths of University of Utah Health.
Demonstrated ability to establish, cultivate and steward strong relationships with donors, alumni and friends to build and maintain lifelong partnerships and trust while aligning the donor's passions and goals with the institution.
A record of accomplishment in engaging alumni, identifying their philanthropic interests, and cultivating relationships to achieve higher fundraising returns.
Knowledge of the fundraising continuum and related principals and policies.
Knowledge of corporate and foundation fundraising and gift planning vehicles.
