Profile

The Assistant, NSO Board and Major Gifts will work with the Assistant Manager of Development, NSO Board and Major Gifts, and the Manager of NSO Individual Giving in the management and long-term development of the National Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors ($1.4M goal) and Major Gifts campaign ($900,000 goal), including research, cultivation, acquisition, stewardship, and ongoing maintenance for both unrestricted and restricted contributions.
Duties and Responsibilities
70% Assist in all aspects of the NSO Board of Directors and Major Gifts campaigns including:
Preparing timely and accurate written communication: Draft and coordinate multiple types of correspondence (acknowledgments, tax receipts, etc.) of varying length and complexity;
Complete timely gift entry forms and ensure accuracy of all billing and contributions;
Prepare individually tailored research briefings on prospective board members and major gift donors;
Providing proactive customer service and stewardship to Board Members and Major Gift donors: Manage donor ticketing and/or reservation needs;
Confirm donor listings and contact information;
Coordinate logistics of annual membership;
Actively steward donors through direct contact via telephone, email, and written communication;
Ensure donor benefit administration;
Researching, identifying, and cultivating a small portfolio of prospective donors utilizing moves management strategies;
Maintaining accurate donor records in hardcopy and electronic formats and in Tessitura;
Maintaining systems to ensure donor recognition in print and online materials, involvement in ancillary activities and events, and accurate and timely renewal of gifts;
Coordinating donor benefit, cultivation, and auxiliary events both on and off-site: Prepare invitations and take responses;
Coordinate scheduling with NSO administrative staff and artists;
Prepare event briefings to be presented to NSO and Kennedy Center senior staff;
Coordinate event check-in and event flow;
Attend events and donor activities for in-person cultivation;
Complete appropriate follow-up following each event;
30% Coordinate logistical details for all Board of Directors meetings (four per year), Executive Committee meetings (four per year) and other committee meetings.
Request materials from committee chairs and compile all necessary materials;
Coordinate the organization and printing of all meeting materials (meeting booklets, handouts, PowerPoints, etc.);
Coordinate with presenters and operate presentations during meetings;
Record all Board and Executive Committee meetings; transcribe meeting minutes; and submit to General Counsel and Board Secretary for review.
Education/Experience
Minimum one to two years development or related experience required.
Bachelor's degree required. An advanced degree in a related field is beneficial.
Working knowledge of the performing arts is preferred.
Minimum Skills and/or Knowledge Required
Superior and professional organizational, written and verbal communication, and interpersonal skills.
Careful attention to detail and awareness of standard accounting procedures.
Ability to foresee development needs, generate work for this position, and multitask efficiently.
A clear understanding of the Kennedy Center mission, and an understanding of the ways in which a fundraising operation works within a large and complex institution.
Ability to deftly manage many relationships and personality types - both internal among staff members, and external among constituents.
Ability and confidence to work with moderate supervision.
Experience with Tessitura is ideal.
