Founded in 1930 through a gift from John D. Rockefeller II, International House Berkeley's mission is to promote cross-cultural experiences and leadership skills for a world of greater understanding. Since its founding, more than 90,000 individuals enrolled at the University of California Berkeley and other Bay Area colleges and universities have resided in the historic facility adjacent to California Memorial Stadium along Piedmont Avenue. During the academic year, nearly 600 residents from 75 nationalities (including the USA) reside in the building which has six floors of residential rooms. The facility includes a conference center featuring the Chevron Auditorium with a capacity of 350, several other smaller meeting rooms, plus a library, and a dining commons with a capacity of 325. With a renewed emphasis on the acquisition of intercultural leadership skills, I-House strives to augment and expand the impact of the residential life experience by encouraging lifetime personal and professional connections that transform lives and offer skills that enrich and enhance career opportunities.
The Director of Development and Communications conceptualizes, designs, articulates and implements a comprehensive and coherent stream of fundraising and constituency outreach efforts on behalf of International House Berkeley. Working in collaboration with the I-House Executive Director, I-House staff and the I-House Board of Directors, s/he establishes appropriate fundraising goals and launches initiatives designed to achieve such goals. S/he also personally cultivates and solicits select donors. S/he manages a staff of five (4 FTE).
Traditionally, I-House fundraising has focused on raising money from alumni and supporters for scholar-ships, capital improvements and donations to general operations. The Director of Development and Communications will evaluate existing programs, goals and outreach efforts and recommend to the Executive Director and the Board of Directors fundraising goals, strategies and plans as I-House approaches its 90th birthday in 2020. It will be his/her responsibility to implement the strategies and plans in order to achieve the agreed upon goals.
A key element of the ongoing fundraising plan for I-House involves growing the donor base to include current or recent residents, younger alumni and members of the broader community. The Director of Development and Communications is responsible for creating and implementing an overarching communications strategy to accomplish this goal, which includes carrying forward and developing further a creative and innovative marketing/communications program utilizing the I-House website and various social media platforms.
The Director of Development and Communications is also charged with working closely with other members of the I-House staff to create and implement a cohesive, coherent effort across the organization to demonstrate the value proposition offered by I-House to donors, prospective donors and members of the I-House community.
Conceives, develops, plans, and implements a comprehensive domestic and international fundraising program to achieve operational goals of $1M-$3M annually and fund present and future capital needs;
Serve as primary liaison to campus administration and units in coordinating donor research;
Oversees planning and implementation of large events, both existing and new, i.e., annual Awards Celebration Gala/Event;
Oversees a dedicated fundraising, alumni relations, and communications team;
Utilizes a coordinated array of marketing and communications strategies, tools, and approaches to support the fundraising effort through social media platforms.
Demonstrated supervisorial experience overseeing a team of individuals striving to attain challenging fundraising goals;
Demonstrated experience managing outreach events and alumni relations activities;
Demonstrated persuasive writing and speaking skills for a variety of different audiences;
Understands university donor and gift solicitation and processing procedures;
Follows and demonstrates adherence to the ethical guidelines of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP);
Comprehends and implements best practices in alumni relations and fundraising advanced by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE);
Displays insights and knowledge about social media outreach and dissemination techniques and methods;
Ability to motivate and reward a team of colleagues in pursuit of stated objectives.
Bachelor's degree in a related field of academics from a regionally-accredited institution of higher education required.
Seven years relevant experience identifying, cultivating, and directly soliciting major gifts in an academic or related non-profit professional setting;
Master's degree or above in a related field or area of study and/or equivalent experience from a regionally-accredited institution of higher education preferred.
