Job Description:

THE OPPORTUNITY:

A newly established role, the Senior Philanthropy Officer will work to expand upon the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s (USHMM) current major, leadership, and principal gift level support and help to advance a culture of high level, sustainable leadership gift-level philanthropy. Based in NYC, the top wealth market in the world, the Senior Philanthropy Officer will serve as a strategic partner to both the Northeast Regional Director and the national development leadership and executive team in Washington, DC. S/he will join an exceptionally committed, passionate team dedicated to the Museum’s continued and expanded impact and success.

The Senior Philanthropy Officer will design and implement both short- and long-term engagement strategies to maximize relationships with existing donors and new donors with the capacity to make gifts in the six- to eight-figure range. S/he will also interact with the national development program, leadership teams, and volunteer leadership at the regional and national levels, as well as with external consultants.

ABOUT USHMM:

A living memorial to the Holocaust, the USHMM inspires citizens and leaders worldwide to confront hatred, prevent genocide, and promote human dignity. USHMM is committed to three primary programmatic and educational pillars: 1) Educate youth, leaders, and the public about the Holocaust; 2) Remember victims and survivors; and 3) Confront genocide and anti-Semitism. Located on the National Mall in Washington, DC, USHMM has welcomed more than 40 million visitors since its dedication in 1993.

The Northeast Regional Office

is located in Midtown Manhattan and comprises New York City and its suburbs, northern New Jersey, Connecticut and New England, and is one of the Museum’s five regional offices nationwide.

FUNDING:

USHMM has a current annual operating budget of approximately $101 million, with federal funds accounting for $54 million, and $44 million generated through philanthropic support, exclusive of endowment and capital commitments. A major comprehensive campaign has far exceeded its original goal with total commitments of $587 million to date. In 2016, the Northeast Region generated approximately $8 million in philanthropy, primarily through special events and individual gifts.

IDEAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Track record of success in a major educational or cultural setting as a major gift fundraiser (six-figures and beyond).

Accustomed to being held accountable for ambitious bottom-line results.

Strategic relationship management experience.

Experience working with a sophisticated donor base.

Familiarity with the NY philanthropic community; knowledge of the broader region is desirable.

Experience navigating and driving success within a large institutional setting.

Able to tap into new opportunities and approaches.

Well-cultivated communication and interpersonal skills.

Entrepreneurial, energetic, and creative.

Diplomatic and ambassadorial.

Able to work effectively with board members and other volunteer leaders.

Committed to working as part of a team.

Tech savvy; experience with MS Office applications and fundraising software.

Availability to attend evening and weekend events on a regular basis and to travel, as required.

Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree is a plus.
