Senior Associate Director of Major Gifts (Westchester-Fairfield)
Reporting to the Executive Director of Major and Planned Gifts, the Senior Associate Director of Major Gifts assists with implementing a comprehensive major gifts program for St. Lawrence University. This position will be based in the Westchester/Fairfield area of New York/Connecticut and will travel extensively within Westchester and Fairfield counties to qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward prospective alumni and friends as major and planned giving donors. The primary focus is on facilitating productive relationships with donors, prospects, and volunteers, resulting in commitments/gifts of $100,000 or more, and collaborating with colleagues in University Advancement to ensure continued and increased effectiveness in our engagement programs for major and planned gifts in managed territories. S/he is responsible for managing approximately 150 qualified prospect households, cultivating them toward solicitation, and closing major gifts.
Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward major and planned giving donors to the University. Maintain a record of activity with prospects in The Raiser’s Edge.
Maintain a portfolio of upwards of 150 qualified prospect households; travel within managed territories to complete prospect visits, the number of which is to be determined on an annual basis.
Prepare proposals for gift solicitations that may include major, planned and annual fund gift components. Focus on securing support for campus-wide priorities/initiatives.
Develop strong relationships with prospective donors, moving them through the cultivation cycle from identification through solicitation and stewardship.
Contribute travel and prospect recommendations for the President and Vice President for University Advancement, as well as other members of senior management and the faculty as necessary, and arrange appointments.
Prepare briefing materials and strategies in advance of these visits.
Assist in the process of finding and securing hosts for presidential and alumni events within managed territories. Staff events as required.
Support initiatives sponsored by offices both within University Advancement and across campus. Events include, but are not limited to, Reunion, Commencement, and Laurentians in Residence.
Travel back to campus regularly for major University weekends, staff retreats, and select trainings.
Remain well-informed about the University’s academic programs and fundraising goals in order to align prospect work with identified institutional priorities.
Perform other duties as assigned or requested to meet departmental goals and objectives.
Bachelor’s degree required.
Ten years minimum professional work experience required. Experience in fundraising or a field utilizing similar skills.
Proven ability to successfully cultivate, solicit and close five- and six-figure gifts.
Experience fundraising for major gifts/planned gifts in a higher education setting preferred.
A willingness to travel frequently, both within managed territory for visits and to Canton, NY, and to work some evenings and weekends.
Excellent organizational, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Outlook, and exposure to relational databases required. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and The Raiser’s Edge preferred.
Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team, build effective relationships, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Ability to develop strong relationships with donors with the highest degree of professionalism and integrity.
