As a member of the Development team, the Deputy Director of Development, Midwest will be part of a two-person regional team responsible for the qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of prospects and donors at the principal and major gift levels in the Midwest. The Deputy Director will support the Director of Development, Midwest in their cultivation efforts, manage a portfolio of major gift prospects and support the organizational lead for details related to fundraising in the region. The Deputy Director will also oversee the accurate tracking of data, the planning of events, the creation of materials related to Midwest development activity and the timely communication of regional work to HQ.
Outcomes
Research, Cultivation & Solicitation
Within 3 months of hire: Develop cultivation and solicitation plan targeting key markets in region to meet goals
Within 6 months of hire: Active cultivation in region underway, with meaningful qualification, solicitation, and stewardship activity progress demonstrated
Within 9 months of hire: Utilizing relationships built in region, identify additional prospects for cultivation and solicitation in year two
Within 1 year of hire: Significant solicitation activity and progress toward collective Midwest goal
Project Management
Work closely with Director of Development, Midwest to identify key needs of individual donors. Within the first month of hire, create a plan for travel and fundraising events for the region that will happen in the next six months and execute on these trips and events flawlessly (including all day-of event logistics, such as briefing materials, travel arrangements, etc.)
All information about the Midwest region’s donor pipeline is tracked and reported to the right people at the right time
Create and submit data-driven materials relating to upcoming development activities to HQ in a timely manner
All engagement, correspondence, solicitations and gifts with/from donors in the region is timely and is tracked accurately in our database
Key Responsibilities
Research, Cultivation & Solicitation
Research and identify new prospects, analyzing their giving histories and developing cultivation strategies
Cultivate, solicit and steward a small portfolio of major gifts prospects, while assisting and providing meeting support to Director of Development, Midwest with principal prospects
Plan and execute multiple principal and senior staff prospecting visits to region per quarter
Help staff development committee(s) or network of volunteers to support fundraising efforts
Partner with Director of Development, Midwest to develop comprehensive prospect strategies for full portfolio
Execute regional prospecting events, as necessary, to meet regional fundraising goals
Project Management
Maintain accurate tracking of prospects and donors within region to ensure appropriate cultivation, solicitation, negotiation and stewardship
Lead preparation of development-related communication including correspondence, proposals, spreadsheets, reports and briefing memos
Develop operating budget and expense forecasts for regional activity, ensuring goals are met on time and in budget
Exercise excellent judgement while handling sensitive and confidential information
Qualifications:
Project Management
Has a proven track record of exceptional project management – effectively plans long-term projects, backwards planning to meet goals
Continually promotes and achieves high standards of quality at work, applies attention to detail to the execution of all projects and constantly looks for problems to solve and ways to improve
Possesses a systems orientation and designs, implements and manages complex, long-term projects through the development of processes/systems to meet deadlines, fulfill commitments, track progress and achieve goals
Functional Knowledge: Fundraising
Has a track-record of meeting (or surpassing) ambitious fundraising goals in a fast-paced, competitive environment over a sustained period
Demonstrates comfort engaging with high-net worth individuals in order to make asks and close large ($500K ) gifts
Is adept at navigating the intricacies of tactical fundraising systems/processes (e.g., prospect tracking and scheduling, CRM maintenance, etc.)
Influencing and Motivating
Cultivates and maintains strong, productive relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders
Possesses exceptional written and verbal communication skills; drafts effective written content with minimal instruction and oversight
Takes a collaborative approach to their work; understands the limitations of their own perspective and works hard to understand the interests/perspectives of others
