The Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing is the world's leading venue for collaborative research in theoretical computer science. Established on July 1, 2012 with a grant of $60 million from the Simons Foundation, the Institute is housed in Calvin Lab, a dedicated building on the UC Berkeley campus. The Simons Institute brings together the world's leading researchers in theoretical computer science and related fields, as well as the next generation of outstanding young scholars, to explore deep unsolved problems about the nature and limits of computation.
The Institute aims to promote fundamental research on the foundations of computer science, as well as to expand the horizons of the field by exploring other scientific disciplines through a computational lens, as natural phenomena in many scientific fields (including mathematics, statistics, physics, astronomy, biology and economics), are intrinsically computational in nature—from chemical processes in living cells to the self-organizing behavior of complex systems of interacting particles, to mechanisms governing human evolution and the collective behavior of competing agents in an economy. The insights gained from such explorations into neighboring scientific fields often reflect back to the theory of computation, opening new directions and advancing our understanding of fundamental issues in complexity theory and algorithms.
The Institute explores these topics primarily through discrete semester-long research programs (typically two per semester). Connecting these individual programs are longer thematic strands. Three of these “long-term focus” thematic areas are of particular interest for the public, as well as for funders: Machine Learning and Data Science; Cryptography, Data Privacy and Computer Security; and computational studies in the Natural and Social Sciences.
The Senior Development Director for the Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing will work closely with the Simons Institute's leadership, and fundraising colleagues in various offices on campus, to secure financial resources for the Institute's long-term success beyond the initial ten-year grant period, which ends in June 2022. This position offers an exciting opportunity to build an individual giving program at the major gifts level, and to substantially expand the Institute's Industrial Partners program.
Once established with an appropriate portfolio, the Senior Development Director will have a revenue target of roughly $5M per year (precise target to be determined, based on financial analysis currently underway) from these two revenue streams (individual major gifts, and the Institute's Industrial Partnership program). This position involves developing, delivering, and administering the Institute's fundraising programs in these two areas. In collaboration with the Institute's leadership, the incumbent will develop highly innovative and customized strategies for specific funders and groups of funders. The incumbent will research, identify and qualify new funding prospects; cultivate and steward individual and institutional funders; and solicit gifts directly (in conjunction with the Institute Director). The Senior Development Director is also the staff liaison for the Institute's newly constituted Strategic Advisory Council. Depending on the successful candidate's background and interests, he/she may also be involved in fundraising from private foundations (a function currently performed by the Managing Director). Given the highly technical nature of the research conducted at the Institute, the Institute's faculty leaders will play a key role in the development of fundraising strategy, as well as in face-to-face interaction with funders.
As the coordinating head of the Institute's development effort, the successful candidate will have an outstanding degree of executive judgment and organization, significantly beyond the level required for standard gift-officer work. And in reflection of the close collaboration with the Institute's faculty leadership, as well as the intellectual depth of the research content, success in this role will rely on exceptional skill for understanding and communicating scientific concepts. Also essential will be a sharp mind for thinking critically and entrepreneurially about fundraising strategy, and a willingness to both synthesize and transcend conventional “best practices”.
This is a highly collaborative position, with close working relationships with Institute faculty and staff. Some academic preparation in the sciences, possibly at the postgraduate level, may enhance the Senior Development Director's effectiveness. And a background of fundraising for scientific research is highly desirable. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of the Institute's research, and in particular because of the Institute's academic ties to various departments and colleges, success in this role requires excellent skills for coalition-building among fundraisers and stakeholders across the university.

This position will require participation in occasional evening and weekend events, and travel.
35% Serves as an expert development professional, with expertise in major/principal gifts and corporate relations. May have an academic background, possibly at the postgraduate level, in the sciences or another quantitative field. Manages a portfolio of 75 - 100 individual and corporate prospects, to include the most influential and highly rated donors, typically with the capacity to give $250,000 or more. Makes at least 10 - 15 substantive contacts per month (i.e., significant moves that advance a relationship). Qualifies major gift prospects independently, and cultivates and solicits prospects in collaboration with Institute leadership. Ensures that predetermined fundraising goals are met, and raises roughly $5M annually from these streams, once established with an appropriate portfolio (precise target to be determined, based on financial analysis currently underway).
20% In consultation with Institute leadership, incumbent develops and implements individualized strategies for cultivation and solicitation of major gifts, gift planning and or corporate prospects (strategies may require a high degree of innovation).
15% Prepares Institute leadership and its top-level ambassadors (Strategic Advisory Council, deans, Vice Chancellor for Research) to present formal fundraising proposals to major donors and prospects; participates in the presentation of proposals to donors and the direct solicitation of gifts.
10% Stewards relationships with ongoing funders.
10% Establishes and evaluates methods for building/maintaining prospect portfolio. Identifies, and assists in the recruitment of, prospective members of the Institute's Strategic Advisory Council, and serves as a key liaison to that body.
5% Provides input and support toward the Institute's pursuit of grants from private foundations and federal agencies. Fundraising in these two streams is managed by Institute's faculty leaders and Managing Director, and does not currently count toward the Senior Development Director's revenue target.
5% As a member of a small, dynamic team within the University, the Senior Development Director is expected to take on a variety of roles that fall outside his or her core job description.

Included here are all of the disciplines of project management, including translating goals into specific actions; building and implementing a complex timeline; foreseeing difficulties and delays; building contingency plans; eliciting timely responses from recalcitrant colleagues; and pivoting efficiently among projects, without falling behind on, or losing track of, the numerous isolated or recurring tasks that fall outside of large projects.
Outstanding written communication and document-production skills, including the ability to produce flawless prose in a variety of communication registers, and to compose polished, error-free documents, precisely tuned to context and refined and accurate in visual presentation.
Outstanding interpersonal skills, including the ability to excel in both leadership and supporting roles in complex, multiparty collaborations; capacity and inclination to cultivate goodwill and foster harmonious outcomes, and to support and inspire colleagues at all levels to do beautiful, polished, and efficient work, in service of the Institute's mission.
Outstanding oral communication, specifically the ability to communicate with clarity, precision and good cheer to a variety of constituencies, including individual donors and corporate partners, resident faculty and staff, campus partners, vendors and contractors. Included here are receptive communication skills, especially the ability to detect misunderstandings early on, and calibrate style and level of detail to the occasion.
Extraordinary thoroughness and attention to detail in all aspects of work, especially: written (punctuation/grammar/style), graphic (typography/presentation/consistency), and task-management-related (keeping thorough track of all commitments and required actions).
Outstanding analytical skills, including the ability to understand and communicate subtle scientific concepts.
An inclination and capacity for innovative thinking, evinced in an ability to think entrepreneurially about fundraising strategy, and a willingness to both synthesize and transcend conventional “best practices”.
Skills to meet or exceed fundraising goals and objectives.
Desired: academic background, possibly at the postgraduate level, in the sciences or another quantitative field.
