Summary and Scope

The Director of Development & Communications will serve as the primary fundraising officer for Horizon House. This role is responsible for creating and implementing a comprehensive development plan to meet annual and long-term fundraising goals in alignment with the strategic plan. The Director will work with private, public and corporate sectors to secure support to help fund the agency’s mission. The Director will also manage the following agency staffing resources related to resource development: Donor Development Manager, Grant Writer, Volunteer Coordinator, and Content Marketing Coordinator.

Major responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Resource Development

Coordinate, oversee and be accountable for successful implementation of objectives in the Strategic Plan.

Secure funding to support organizational budget through the solicitation of major gifts, foundation grants, special events, individuals, corporate, faith-based and organization support.

Develop, analyze and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy.

Track budgeted revenue to actual revenue and develop strategies to cover financial gaps.

Provide collaborative support to donor development manager to implement stewardship program aimed at cultivating deeper ties with donors and diversify the donor base/pipeline to secure new funding and cultivating deeper ties with donors.

Develop, execute and measure effectiveness for all appeals.

Monitor that donor information is maintained within constituent database; Provide analysis/fundraising dashboard to board and senior leaders.

Oversee planning and implementation of special events to raise awareness and funds.

Oversight of grant writer with respect to applications, administration and reporting of grants. Collaborate with Programs Director to ensure all grant proposals and outcomes reflect the programs and services strategy.

Manage requests and participation for external events – Community Events, Agency Fairs, etc.

Develop and execute a comprehensive marketing/communications plan that is integrated with the development plan and communicates the impact of Horizon House.

Volunteer Program

Oversee implementation of agency Volunteer Program through direct management of volunteer coordinator.

Work with volunteer coordinator to identify methods to expand volunteer support into financial support.

Oversee in-kind donation process and ensure timely stewardship occurs. Where possible, cultivate relationships to grow stronger support.

Organization / HR Management

Partner with senior leadership team to set agency goals. Actively participate in agency management system.

Foster a motivational environment that retains a high quality, diverse staff and allows them to develop to their full potential and meet their responsibilities.

Ensure job descriptions are developed and regular performance evaluations are held and all performance issues addressed in a timely fashion.

Performs other duties as requested by the Executive Director

Required Skills/Knowledge

Bachelor’s Degree required; Major in Philanthropy, Business or other appropriate field preferred

Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Strong leadership skills

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with board members, staff, volunteers, and the funding community

Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously with great attention to detail

Ability to represent Horizon House to diverse public audiences

Understanding the needs and roles of a day center for homeless people in the continuum of meeting human service needs is preferred.

Preferred Experience

Prefer minimum of five years’ experience in managing development or operations in a non-profit agency with at least two years in a leadership capacity; or an equivalent combination of experience

Experience in fundraising and/or sales experience

Experience in or across multiple sectors, including nonprofit, public and corporate environments preferred
