Principal Responsibilities:

Job Title:Development Director

Reports to: Chief Executive Officer

Status:Full Time; Exempt, At-Will, Benefitted

The Development Director serves as a member of the Center's Management Team and is responsible for the planning and development and implementation of the Centers Financial Resource Development plan. The Development Director is the lead member of the fund-raising team and is a full-time member of the APJCC Staff.


Work with CEO and the management team to develop a fund development vision for the future of the organization, build a sustainable fundraising stream to support the current mission, and develop appropriate policies, programs, goals and long-range strategies to advance the revenues and varied funding sources for the Center.

Actively engage with the CEO and CFO in creating and implementing a comprehensive fund development plan for the Addison-Penzak JCC.

Develop a systematic fundraising plan that includes both individual (community and major gift) and institutional (business and foundation) targets.

Direct annual campaign and affinity programs.

Cultivate and nurture donors and face-to-face solicitations, reach out to new prospective donors and set up appointments with these prospective donors.

Provide fund development guidance and leadership to board members, executive team members, key funders, foundations, corporations, staff, community leaders and others critical to individual and institutional fundraising efforts.

Staff the board fundraising and major fundraising event committees as well as plan and supervise fundraising and donor appreciation/recognition events.

Provide oversight, guidance and support to current events and departments requiring sponsorship including Center for Jewish Life and Learning, Cultural Arts, Wellness Fair, South Bay Teen Idol and Chanukah Palooza.

Implement and oversee the APJCC Planned Giving Program.

Oversee the development of the departments strategic and operational business plans.

Prepare and oversee detailed department budgets and resource allocation management.

Oversee the grant proposal process to secure funding from foundations and government agencies.

Other Executive and Leadership Functions

Provide guidance and support to the CEO and key volunteers with key solicitations and donor cultivation.

Work with the CEO and the Development Committee on capital and endowment campaigns.

Work with the CFO to prepare and present development updates to the Board on a monthly basis and provide fundraising training to the board.

Work with key Silicon Valley Jewish Federation staff on collaborative fundraising and funding initiatives.

Provide guidance to various board committees/task forces.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Staff and donor management experience of a complex development department.

Proven track record of successfully meeting fundraising goals.

Knowledge of and ability to provide leadership and expertise in the areas of major gift solicitations, fundraising initiatives, fundraising trends, donor analysis, annual giving campaigns, foundation and corporate relations, social media/e-fundraising, volunteer management and fundraising events.

Demonstrated experience to prioritize based on opportunities, economic/philanthropic trends and agency goals. Ability to synthesize complex ideas and activities into coherent and compelling narratives.

Ability to manage simultaneous, multiple projects, establishing priorities and meeting deadlines.

Strong interpersonal skills with people at all levels and in all settings.

Exceptional leadership, management, supervision and motivational skills; function well as the leader of a fully participative, engaged organization, fostering a trusting and respectful environment.

Ability to relate to a highly diverse environment including the CEO, Board of Directors, staff, neighborhood and community leaders, and volunteers.

Interact with stakeholders with grace and respect.

Ability to function productively in a financially demanding environment; work independently and accept direction.

Encourage and promote accountability at all levels.

Excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills.

Ability to work with diverse belief systems, values and cultures.

Good judgment, discretion, confidentiality.

Computer skills including fundraising software, recordkeeping, and office procedures.

Additional responsibilities as assigned by the CEO and/or Board of Directors.

Diplomacy and patience along with a sense of humor!

Working Conditions:

Fitness Center/Community Center environment

Ability to lift/carry a minimum of 35 pounds

Ability to stand/sit for long periods

Ability to communicate in English

Minimum Qualifications:


Bachelors degree required

Minimum of three (3) years experience of management of people.

Five (5) years of real work experience in Fundraising and Development in a Non-Profit environment preferred

Problem-solving and analytical skills to interpret rental needs

Proven ability to motivate and lead staff.

Experience collaborating with a team to develop APJCC team needs

Highly motivated, detailed, and organized.

Excellent oral and written communication skills, plus a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office is required.

Base salary

This position is contingent upon the completion and cleared background check of a fingerprint and life scan assessment.
