Background

Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH), on the cusp of its 50

th

Anniversary, seeks a Development Director to work closely with the Executive Director, Board leadership, and staff team to sustain and expand DTH's unique, world-renown institution, which includes the professional company, school and community engagement programs. DTH ( DanceTheatreofHarlem.org

), recognized as one of the leading dance institutions in the United States, makes the beauty and discipline of classical ballet accessible to diverse artists and audiences across New York and the globe.

Founded in 1969 by Karel Shook and Arthur Mitchell in response to the tragic assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., DTH was envisioned to transform lives by providing access to quality arts and education programming. Mitchell, the first African American to become a principal dancer in a U.S. ballet company (New York City Ballet), was inspired to start a school that would offer children in his home community – Harlem – the opportunity to study and excel in classical dance. Accordingly, DTH’s founding mission was based on three principles: Education, Social Awareness and Artistic Excellence.

Now in its 48

year, these three ideals continue to pervade all that DTH does by:

Maintaining a world-class school that trains young people in classical ballet and allied arts;

Providing arts education, community outreach, and positive role models for all; and

Presenting a Company of African American and racially diverse artists who perform the most demanding repertory at the highest level of quality.

DTH operates on a $5,500,000 budget comprised of half earned revenue and half contributed income. DTH is governed by a 14-member Board of Directors, employs 70 people, including 20 full-time administrative staff, 16 dancers, and 35 part-time employees made up of dance teachers, teaching artists, production and administrative support staff.

Anniversary in 2019. This is a superb professional growth opportunity for the right individual who is ready for a highly visible, change-making career step. Growing and managing a pipeline of individual and institutional donors and prospects will be a major focus for the Development Director. He/she will manage a direct report, as well as consultant support, and ultimately grow the development department to fully support DTH’s fundraising. Key to success in this position is the ability to work collaboratively with the Executive Director to be a strategic partner in stewarding and growing relationships with major individual, corporate and foundation donors. All members of the staff must work well both cooperatively and independently, and thrive in a close-knit, work environment.

Responsibilities

Develops an annual fundraising plan to sustain and grow support.

Creates and implements strategies for research, identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of prospects and donors, with a focus on major individual, family foundation, corporate, and foundation supporters.

Stewards (including soliciting, as appropriate) donors and prospects in conjunction with the Executive Director, Board members, and other staff members.

Oversees development database and tracking systems to ensure appropriate donor stewardship and tracking to evaluate and report performance.

Manages the assignments and activities of the Development Committee and supervises the fundraising-related assignments and activities of a gala consultant and others.

Cultivates the growth of a newly-created national circle of Ambassadors of donors who will assist with promoting DTH’s 50

th

Anniversary and its related activities.

Expands strategically corporate partnerships/sponsorships.

Supports major foundation relationships with the Executive Director and assists with grant proposals and grant management, as needed.

Oversees the smooth running of fundraising events such as cultivation dinners and galas.

Attends executive leadership meetings as needed.

Helps to maximize Board commitment to achieve higher donation levels and ongoing commitments.

Develops professional relationships with Board members; educates and orients the Board, honing skills in donor cultivation; works with the Board on all fundraising related activities; helps to build the Board.

Qualifications

Five to 10 years' experience in fundraising and donor cultivation, with a proven track record.

Experience in successfully soliciting significant contributions.

Exceptionally well organized with attention to detail and follow-through.

Strong people manager.

Flexibility to juggle multiple tasks and relationships, prioritize assignments, and meet deadlines is required.

Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

Experience with Raiser’s Edge or similar fundraising software system is desirable.

Creative, strategic thinker.

Bachelor’s degree required.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. As a dance company committed to physical wellbeing, the DTH benefits package includes individual health, vision, and dental coverage for full-time employees, and an art-full, dynamic work environment. This position is exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (“FLSA”), as well as under any and all applicable state (New York) and local laws, rules and regulations.
