Profile

Chicago Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights (CLCCR) seeks a dynamic development professional to lead our fundraising efforts. He or she should be a creative and strategic thinker with direct experience in soliciting funds from law firms, corporations, foundations, and major individual donors in Chicago and nationally. Our Development Director will lead a development and communications team committed to steadily growing the enterprise by working collaboratively to increase and diversify funding, and to strengthen CLCCR's brand and visibility inside and outside of Chicago. The position will be located in our downtown Chicago office. Founded in 1969 at the height of Chicago's Freedom Movement, CLCCR is Chicago's leading nonprofit civil rights legal organization. Our mission is to secure racial equity and economic opportunity for all. We provide legal support through partnerships with the private bar and collaborate with grassroots organizations and other advocacy groups to implement communitybased reforms. As we approach our 50th Anniversary next year, CLCCR is in the midst of an organizational change process to more strategically focus our advocacy. The Board adopted a new mission statement in 2017, and we have a new message platform and website. CLCCR's Board recently expanded to include business and community leaders, as well as lawyers. We are well positioned to take on 21st century civil rights challenges, and to elevate our fundraising and visibility to the next level. Our new Development Director will play an instrumental role in achieving this goal. CLCCR pursues its advocacy through litigation, transactional legal assistance, policy advocacy, community education, coalition building, and media advocacy. Our projects focus on education equity, housing opportunity, voting rights, hate crime, pro se federal court settlements, police accountability, and community economic development. CLCCR has a F.T.E. staff of 18 and a $2 million budget. We have achieved significant litigation and policy reform victories throughout our history with support from over 40 member law firms. Pro bono partnerships are central to our business model and delivery of legal assistance.  CLCCR holds two major fundraising events each year in Chicago: Our Annual Benefit and The Power of Connection (specifically focused on our community economic development work). CLCCR's annual budget includes over $800,000 from foundations, over $500,000 from law firms and corporations, over $500,000 from government, and additional funds from attorneys' fees and individual donors. The Development Director will have responsibility for overseeing all aspects of our fundraising operations, with emphasis on growing CLCCR's annual events, corporate support, and major donor base. The Development Director will take the lead with the Executive Director to use our 50th Anniversary in 2019 as a platform for significant growth in funding and visibility. Job Responsibilities The Development Director will serve on the management team and report directly to the Executive Director. He or she will supervise a staff team that includes a Grants Specialist, Communications Manager, and Database Specialist. Specific duties include: • Developing a strategic fundraising plan with specific goals, targets, and tactics to continually increase revenue. • Working closely with the Executive Director and Board to develop and execute an aggressive plan for a successful 50th Anniversary Gala. • Planning and executing CLCCR's current annual fundraising events, and developing new events. • Increasing the breadth and giving levels of CLCCR's individual major donor base. • Increasing contributions from law firms, corporations, and foundations inside and outside of Chicago. • Maximizing CLCCR's fundraising database and developing other systems needed to support fundraising. • Working closely with the Communications Manager to build our brand identity. Qualifications • Seven or more years of fundraising experience, including annual events and personal cultivation and solicitation of individual major gifts. • A commitment to and ability to articulate CLCCR's mission and impact. • Experience in serving on leadership teams in progressive nonprofit organizations. • Experience with marketing and brand building. • Experience and success in the cultivation and stewardship of volunteer and donor networks through a variety of creative outreach strategies, including events and communications. • Experience in implementing and managing databases and other systems needed to support an aggressive fundraising program. • Excellent written and oral communications skills. • Experience with developing and implementing strategies for list expansion. • Team player with excellent organizational, networking, and relationship-building skills. • Self-starter who is able to multi-task. • Preference given to applicants with knowledge of the Chicago legal, corporate, and philanthropic communities.
