KEY FUNCTIONS
Director of Institutional Giving
will raise the organization’s profile nationally, in pursuit of high-value partnerships with foundations. These partnerships will yield revenue, expand awareness of **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. across sectors, with a focus on the philanthropic sector. The position requires a strategic thinker, synthesizer, and consummate networker who is able to ignite enthusiasm and inspire people to support our cause to advance racial equity. This person will understand the **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. mission and strategy, and will communicate effectively—internally and externally. The Director of Institutional Giving will partner closely with the Senior Director of Development and Partnerships, the Senior Vice President of Development and Partnerships, the Development and Partnerships Associate, the President, the Chief of Staff, and the Program and Finance teams. This position also directly manages any outside grantwriting consultants (as needed). This position is located in either **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***.’s New York City or Oakland office. This is not a remote position.
This is a unique opportunity for a talented fundraiser to help put racial equity into practice.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Grant Writing and reporting- 60%
Lead the development of long- and short-term institutional fundraising strategies with executive team for operating, capital, reserve, and special initiatives
Collaborate with Senior Vice President of Development and Partnerships and **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. President to cultivate and steward institutional foundation relationships in support of **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***.’s activities
Partner with SVP to raise the annual and multi-year budget, including reserves, in consultation with the Executive Team, Board, and Program Directors.
Independently author and prepare comprehensive funding proposals for institutional awards
Customize key external case statements, proposals, reports, concept papers, letters of intent, presentations, and other required proposal-related materials, in whatever format is best suited for requests
Work with Impact Planning and Evaluation and Program teams to integrate objectives/outcomes into grant proposals
Maintain funder files, electronically and hard copy
Ensure grant reporting and follow-up to keep grantors engaged and informed
Acknowledge institutional funders with customized approach, including letters, recognition through marketing, and/or event participation
Manage contract grantwriter as needed
Prospect Research - 25%
Research new public and private institutional funding opportunities to advance strategic program goals and increase revenue, building an 2-5 year pipeline of funding
Rank prospects by viability
Reach out to potential funders to gauge alignment
Work with Board of Directors and other key **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. partners and donors to make connections with prospective institutional funders
When needed, represent **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. at meetings to cultivate prospective funders
Work with Impact Planning and Program teams to develop best ways to tell story of impact to prospective donors
Finance Partnering 10%
Confirm financial compliance with all grant requirements
Collaborate with Finance and Program teams on grant budgets
Systems 5%
Oversee organization of foundation cultivation and prospect identification systems
Oversee maintenance of existing fundraising systems, including reporting, prospect lists, development calendar, year-to-date, and related functions
Manage Development Associate to ensure funder database records are up-to-date, and aid in preparation of analytical reports to measure progress toward fundraising goals for **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***.’s leadership
Job Qualifications:
8 to 10 years of experience working with foundations, with results in new partnerships and grants, including successful solicitation of six-figure grants.
Demonstrated extensive knowledge of and commitment to racial justice funding and organizing. Direct racial justice organizing experience preferred.
Exceptional verbal and written communication, with the ability to edit others’ work and to write and speak in clear and compelling ways. Ability to translate program language into powerful and persuasive arguments for funding. Ability to write quickly, and to manage multiple writing deadlines at a time.
Excellent interpersonal, team, and negotiation skills.
Excellent project management and budget development experience.
Ability to build constructive and generative relationships both internally and externally to **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***..
Ability to plan and administer multiple concurrent projects, under concrete deadlines.
Intellectual and strategic curiosity.
A positive attitude and an entrepreneurial spirit. Sense of humor appreciated.
Willingness to work periodic weekends and evenings.
Willingness to roll up your sleeves and do what it takes to do the job well.
Strong knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Experience with and commitment to using Salesforce.
Compensation
The salary range for this position is $82,000 to $91,000. In addition, we offer an excellent benefits package including health and dental insurances, employer contribution to retirement plan and to flexible spending account, vacations, and a sabbatical.
