Since our founding in 1980, AFT has helped permanently protect over 6.5 million acres of agricultural lands, advanced environmentally-sound farming practices on millions of additional acres, and helped thousands of farm families make a go of it (primarily through programs that increase farm viability and/or enhance farmland access).
The Vice President for Development (VPD) provides leadership and direct support for AFTs Development Department and reports directly to the President. The VPD is part of AFTs Executive Team and Senior Management Team.
This position will be based out of AFTs National Office in Washington, DC.
Duties and Responsibilities
The primary responsibilities of the VPD are to provide the leadership necessary to raise the funds that AFT must secure on an annual basis to sustain and grow its programming and to advance its mission. (AFT expects its annual fundraising target for FY19 will be approximately $15m. AFT is currently in a growth phase, and expects to continue to grow, perhaps significantly, for the foreseeable future.)
The VPD has the following specific responsibilities:
Fundraising Responsibilities
Executes a comprehensive fundraising campaign (as is being planned for launch in 2019) intended to help AFT scale-up to a significant new level of activity;
Establishes and implements the infrastructure needed to raise adequate funds, through the solicitation of major gifts, federal grants, membership revenue, and corporate support;
Expands and diversifies AFTs donor base;
Diversifies AFTs revenue streams (to include more unrestricted and earned revenue);
Works closely with other staff to help secure funding for new initiatives;
Leadership Responsibilities
Works with the President and other staff to ensure that the work of the Development Department embraces smart strategies that can support and sustain AFTs growth;
Works with the CFO and other staff to develop and implement operating processes for the Development Department, to enhance efficiency and increase return on investment;
Works with Communications staff to create a compelling narrative to enhance AFTs brand;
Helps Program staff fundraise for national and regional programming, and supports Program Managers in fostering strong financial support for their work;
Prepares reports for the President and the Board of Directors that accurately track AFTs fundraising progress and that utilize sound metrics to identify needs and opportunities.
Management Responsibilities
Plays the lead role in recruiting, hiring, supervising, and mentoring Development staff;
Approves financial reports, contracts and other financial and administrative documents as needed;
Fosters collaboration and coordination among all departments;
The VPD must be highly strategic, analytical, outgoing, and energetic. The VPD must also have significant direct fundraising experience, a proven track record of fundraising success, and be an exceptional manager. The individual should have knowledge of agriculture and/or land conservation. The VPD must be highly motivated, highly creative, and possess strong interpersonal skills. The VPD must have excellent communication skills that span a full range of abilities (including the ability to write persuasive letters and compelling copy, make powerful public presentations, communicate well by phone, make asks, close deals, negotiate persuasively, and build and maintain trust with a wide variety of partners).
A BS degree and a minimum of 10 years of related work experience in non-profit fundraising;
At least 5 years of experience supervising and managing fundraising professionals;
Direct experience participating in a successful fundraising campaign of at least $50m;
Proven track record of meeting revenue goals;
Familiarity with fundraising and customer relationship management systems;
A work history and a commitment to developing effective organizational systems for managing programs, staff, budgets and workplans.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
A collaborative, outgoing, professional, and innovative approach;
Ability to deliver high quality work, quickly, in a dynamic organization;
Ability to travel approximately 15% of time.
