The Director of Development and Alumni Relations is responsible for all fundraising functions of the school.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: managing the Advancement department, providing strategic direction for fundraising goals and creating inspiring and creative tactical plans to meet those goals, developing meaningful alumni and parent relationships, managing and conducting solicitations, and meeting the Annual Fund goal.

Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities

Provide strategic direction and leadership for all philanthropic efforts at Shady Hill

Hire, manage, train, develop, and evaluate an advancement staff of four direct reports including the Director of Annual Programs, Director of Community Relations and Stewardship, Director of Advancement Services and Research, and Community Engagement Manager

Prepare and update annual and long-range development plans, including identifying potential donors and developing individualized solicitation strategies

Manage, cultivate, solicit and steward a portfolio of 100-125 major gift prospects

Oversee and collaborate with the Communications Department in the design and production of all fund-raising materials, publications, and the Advancement Department’s web presence

Oversee the donor recognition and appreciation processes

Oversee donor database management

Establish a planned giving program

Prepare and administer Advancement Office budgets

Represent the Advancement Office at engagement events, including some nights and weekends

Participate as an active member of national, regional, and local professional organizations and attend selected conferences and workshops

Serve as the administrative liaison to the Advancement Committee and the Alumni Board

Oversee the planning and coordination of alumni and parent development events

Foster strong relationships with alumni through group events and visits

Manage all non-Annual Fund alumni giving and outreach programs

Establish reunion fundraising and campaign goals with the Director of External Relations

Work with the Director of Community Relations to recruit volunteers for reunion year fundraising

Work with class correspondents and class agents to solicit alumni donors and to gather class notes

Partner with the Director of Communications on the annual magazine to highlight alumni

Carry out additional responsibilities as assigned by the Director of External Relations or Head of School

Skills and Abilities

Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the School’s mission

Proven ability to mentor staff and foster teamwork and cooperation

Outstanding interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills

Track record of fund-raising success

Ability to think strategically and tactically

Excellent organizational skills, ability to establish and manage multiple priorities, and ability to work gracefully under pressure

Demonstrated ability to develop deep, stakeholder relationships

Demonstrated ability to identify and implement “best practices” for advancement management

Punctuality and dependability

Adherence to all personnel policies, procedures, and rules promulgated by the School

Ability to maintain productive and professional relationships with students, other employees, School parents, and the Board of Trustees

Sense of humor and joy

Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree required, masters degree preferred

7 years of development experience

Experience in alumni relations or a similar engagement role

Working knowledge of Raiser’s Edge preferred

Schedule Requirements

A minimum of standard business hours Monday – Friday.

Ability to travel and work evenings and weekends as necessary
