New Orleans Residents Surveyed by FundraisingCrossing
The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation’s research has identified mixed feelings among the population living in New Orleans three years after Hurricane Katrina.
The Kaiser Foundation surveyed nearly 1,300 area residents on a series of subjects that would measure their perspective on living in an area overturned by the hurricane.
After three years, many feel they have been forgotten, and that the rebuilding process is moving too slowly.
Fifty-six percent of those questioned believe the rebuilding is going in the right direction.
From there, roughly 8 out of 10 surveyed feel the federal government has not provided enough support, and nearly 7 out of 10 believe federal money allocated to relief has been misspent.
About 60% interviewed think the only area of progress made is in the repair of floodwalls and levees, while 70% believe little progress has been made in the affordability of living and crime control.
Still, Kaiser Foundation President David Altman sees hope. He concludes, “The fact that so many people in the city are still optimistic about the future is surprising.”
The study shows that three-fourths of those surveyed feel optimistic about the future of New Orleans, and will stay there to see better days.
Many nonprofit organizations seek to promote themselves on the integrity or catchiness of their name alone. However, name along is not enough for effective fundraising. Marketing strategies are highly important to the success of a nonprofit. Marketing is about explaining briefly but effectively who you are, what you do, and where to find you.
For the nonprofit organization, marketing begins with an effective tagline. The tagline should not attempt to be all things to all people, just as your organization cannot be that. The tagline simply needs to be brief, focused, sharp, unique, and emotionally engaging.
Three new reports address how the charity sector faces challenges, including the need for more diversity in philanthropy, more effective nonprofit boards, and more investment in nonprofit leadership.
According to a report by the Dorothy A. Johnson Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership at Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the nonprofit sector is not doing enough to provide professional development opportunities and leadership training to prospective nonprofit executive directors.
Silicon Valley Loses Jobs in July; California Unemployment Rate Rises to 7.3%; EmploymentCrossing Unperturbed
Pasadena, CA — Silicon Valley is facing a rare occurrence as the region has suffered its first yearly job loss since July of 2004, thanks in large part to the bursting of the housing bubble. In the one-year period ending in July, the high-tech mecca lost 1,400 jobs, or 0.2%, marking its first decline in four years. Meanwhile, California’s overall jobless rate crept to 7.3% in the month of July, while the so-called misery index for the state, which refers to the rate of unemployment combined with the rate of inflation, topped 12%. Nonetheless, EmploymentCrossing’s figures give good cause to be untroubled by the reported depletion of jobs in California.
